Which new data, modelling, and systems-thinking is needed for land use in Scotland?
Background
Question Group: Focused on creating climate-resilient landscapes through optimised land use, and climate-positive landscapes through research to reduce emissions and enhance natural carbon sinks. Emphasises systems thinking and leveraging data, modelling, and decision-support tools to mitigate climate impacts, enhance land management, and manage pressures on water resources while promoting a just transition.
Sub-questions: -How can we apply new environmental data (e.g. drones, earth observation satellites, eDNA, AI, LiDAR) for analysis, and develop metrics that work across relevant policy areas?
-How can we ensure that data and decision-making makes sense at regional and catchment scales and be well-aligned with site level data?
-How can we improve data and model integration for land use?
-How can models used for decision making integrate place-based and behavioural models, in addition to findings from citizen science and living labs?
-What land based decision support tools are needed to help land managers, regional planners and national govt to make decisions, and how can the Decision Support Strategy enable these tools to support more integrated land use decisions?
-What data evidence/land agent tools do land managers and decisionmakers already use? Investigate improving skills and training of workforce across land industries
- What models are currently used for land use decision-making, how effective are they, and why do land managers often not use these tools?
-How can the Decision Support Strategy provide a framework for integrating diverse data sources and modelling approaches (biophysical, economic, behavioural) to support coherent, multi-scale land use decision-making?
