ARI 19 Interactions between the land-use and marine planning systems and achievement of environmental targets and commitments (including: legislation, policy and guidance, delivery and funding mechanisms, and monitoring).
Background
Within the question group Environmental Outcomes and System Change, we use a range of data, analysis and expert judgment to make an annual assessment of progress towards government environmental targets in England and Northern Ireland. Planning regulations and reforms can affect the achievement of environmental targets on land and at sea; our research supports our understanding of their impacts. We also aim to increase our understanding of how the implementation and reform of environmental law and system-wide approaches, including those aimed at addressing climate change, can contribute to achieving goals and targets.
We aim to improve our understanding of governance mechanisms and how they interact with other systems through which environmental objectives are delivered (e.g. policy-making processes, regulation, funding, infrastructure and land-use planning).

Evidence synthesis to inform monitoring and evaluation of marine spatial management in the UK
Given the economic, social and environmental value of the marine environment it makes sense to manage it in a way that ensures long term sustainability of both ecosystems and human uses. We can only do this if we underst...

Why might this be relevant?
The project aims to develop innovative land-sea governance schemes, which partially addresses the question by focusing on governance aspects but does not directly address monitoring and evaluation of marine spatial management.

Why might this be relevant?
The project focuses on developing a Decision Support System for ecosystem-based maritime spatial planning, which partially addresses the question by enhancing spatial conservation measures but does not directly address monitoring and evaluation of marine spatial management.
