The reducing environmental impacts strategic priority is in recognition that there is an environmental aspect to all transport, and therefore almost all the work of DfT. Transport is the largest emitting sector of greenhouse gases in the UK, contributing 27% of domestic emissions in 2019. Our transport system must change to deliver the government’s Net Zero ambition and DfT will drive forwards that change through our longer-term green transport agenda. On decarbonisation specifically, we published our Transport decarbonisation plan (TDP) in July 2021, which sets out the steps we will take to deliver the necessary carbon reductions across every form of transport. Sustainability will be at the heart of levelling-up. People everywhere will feel the benefits – villages, towns, cities, and countryside will be cleaner, greener, healthier and more prosperous and pleasant environments in which to live and work

The project is relevant as it aims to safeguard biodiversity and its contributions to people by developing user-oriented Decision Support Applications (DSAs), and leveraging on Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships (MSPs), which could be used to monitor biodiversity alongside transport infrastructure.
Globally we continue to exploit our finite environmental space and environmental impact is an increasingly important issue in most human activities. Regulatory requirements and the need to be seen as sustainable have cha...

The project partially answers the question by proposing a Biodiversity Indexing method that could be applied to specific locations to quantify biodiversity impact and demonstrate the benefits of environmental mitigation activities. The authors have the necessary expertise as the project is based on an Msc thesis and the methodology will be documented and presented to key users.
This Fellowship will help resolve ongoing conflicts between two national priorities: the need for new infrastructure, and the safeguarding of protected species and their habitats. Improving national infrastructure is one...

The project partially answers the question by aiming to help practitioners and decision makers understand and mitigate the impacts of major infrastructure developments on protected wildlife and habitats. The author has a successful track record of end-user engagement and will develop Good Practice Guidelines. The project aligns with the objective of more strategic environmental protection and transparent decision-making. The author will also support the development of ecological monitoring and mitigation schemes.
